Guidance for Homeowners Evaluating Shower Drain Options

Structural Considerations: Floor Joists and Plumbing Limitations

Shower drain placement may be dictated by the location of floor joists and plumbing. Modifying the framing to reroute drains can add significant cost and complexity to your project. There are solutions that work within these existing parameters to streamline installation.

Drain Placement Solution: A Curb

When framing changes aren’t an option, there are three main approaches: a center drain, a linear drain at the back wall, or a linear drain at the existing tub drain location. All require a curb, and tile size isn’t limited. The most budget-friendly choice is 2"x2", commonly found in porcelain and natural stone collections. Linear drains can be placed flush against the wall or within the field. For a center drain, tiles larger than 4" need a cut from the drain to the corner, which may not be perfectly balanced but still looks fine.

Barrier-Free Design

  • Barrier Free, Linear Drain at Back or Center Drain- Popular choice among builders and designers. This requires the shower pan to be lowered 2.5".

  • Barrier Free, Linear Drain at Entrance- This is accomplished with a subfloor lowering kit, which enables a seamless, step-free transition. One obvious disadvantage is the water flowing towards the shower entrance.

  • Curbless, Linear Drain at Back or Center Drain- This design features a 2"-3" step without a curb. A ramp may be installed at any time to accommodate a wheel chair.

Coordinating Finishes: Drain Options

Select a drain that complements or matches your plumbing fixtures. Center & Linear Drains are available in a variety of finishes including Stainless Steel, Brushed Nickel, and 8 Powder Coated Colors.
